Only time will tell if Rinaldo learns his lesson this time.
The incident occurred in Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning when Rinaldo delivered the check to the head of Tampa Bay forward Cedric Paquette.
The Hurricanes were the only team who succeeded on Tuesday, grinding out a 3-1 win against the Devils.
If he ever gets to serve his suspension, it will cost Rinaldo $51,829.25.
Rinaldo injured Pittsburgh Penguins All-Star defenseman Kris Letang last season with a headshot, then bragged after the game that he “changed the game” and possibly “changed the whole season”. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The NHL Department of Player Safety puts out videos after they make rulings for suspensions, which describe the hit and the reason for the suspension. If the Bruins bring Rinaldo back up, he will have to sit out for five games.
This is the fourth suspension of Rinaldo’s career and first as a member of the Bruins.
This season the National Hockey League has made a point to highlight issues with illegal hits. He was later suspended eight games for charging and boarding.
